After the Federal Republic were divided in 1945 in the zones of occupation and in the western zones (French, British and American zones) the currency reform was announced, the government of the GDR led on 18 June 1948 the closure of land routes from West Germany in the lying in the middle of the East West Berlin. Then started the Western occupying powers, the legendary airlift, on the West Berlin was supplied with all goods. The closing of the overland route was only on 4 May 1949 because of the Jessup-Malik Agreement repealed.
